Bled Island

The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary

Above the Bled Lake is the only real island in Slovenia. There is still some Ice Age limestone remaining under the trees covering the moraine. The island probably had a special meaning in prehistoric times and our famous poet Prešeren made poems about it. The way to come to the island is by a sort of a roof-topped boat called pletna. This type of boat with a single rower is known only in Bled.

Slovenian EU Presidency Fails in Environmental Policy

Denis Kajić - Greenpeace believes that Slovenia as a presiding country of the EU should adopt a more determined approach in terms of environmental policies if it wants to leave an important mark on European political scene. “Slovenia must take over the leading role in presiding the EU and not allow the great players to make decisions that only benefit them”, says Nina Štros, Greenpeace’s representative in Slovenia.

The Faces of Ljubljana

More than dragons

Francesca Rolandi - The dragon on the castle standing over the city is the symbol of Ljubljana. According to a legend, the Greek hero Jason and his Argonauts stole the Golden Fleece. Their ship called Argo attempted to escape and arrived to the mouth of the Danube River. They continued to sail the Danube and Sava rivers all the way to the Ljubljanica eventually stopping in the marsh around the present-day Ljubljana.

Bled Lake

Video journey to the Bled Lake

Bled lake is situated at the foot of the Julian Alps and is known as one of the most beautiful tourist resorts of the Alps. There is a small island in the western part of the lake with the St. Mary’s Church in the centre of it, and the oldest Slovenian castle (the old town of Bled) on the cliff overhanging the lake.

Krn 2244m

Julian Alps, Slovenia

Vanda Panić - Mmmm, it looked really impressive after 5 hours of driving and waiting on the Slovenian highway, and 2,5 hours of steep and monotonous ascent on Komna, and sleeping in a lovely Komna hut….but, let’s start from the beginning…..

Itineraries

Ljubljana's market place
Perhaps this is the most magical place in town: market place on the river bank. In the heart of the city one encounters odours and contradictions of this city, richness of the shops in the centre, elderly people walking around tables looking for something they can afford as their pensions are rather modest.

Finally. The mayors of two towns have started tearing down the wall that has been dividing the Transalpine Square in two: a symbol of what Iron Curtain used to be. The celebration will go on the next day, the 1st of May, when Slovenia becomes the EU member-state.

General information

This small republic (20.273 km²) is located in the northern part of the Balkan region. It borders Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the north-east and Croatia to the south. When travelling through this country from north towards south one passes through the alpine landscapes of Triglav national park and Lake Bled (where Tito used to have his private residence), all the way to the Adriatic sea and the small part of the Istrian coast that belongs to Slovenia. This is one of the most compact and homogenous republics in former Yugoslavia, with regards to the national structure of its population.
